Your first visit

Before you arrive

A first appointment, explained one step at a time.

Come with your questions. The first visit is a conversation, an examination and a clear plan for what happens next.

A little preparation

What helps before the appointment.

01

Bring what you have

Previous X-rays, a medicine list or notes about a concern can help, but you can still come without them.

02

Say what makes visits difficult

Tell the team about anxiety, a sensitive tooth or a previous experience you do not want repeated.

03

Allow enough time

A first visit needs room for questions, an examination and an explanation of the findings.

Why patients consider it

What this treatment is designed to address

Benefits depend on the starting condition, the treatment plan and how the mouth responds. Your dentist will explain what is realistic for your case before treatment begins.

Pressure adjusted to your teeth

The instruments used for scaling can be softened or slowed down for teeth or gums you already know are sensitive, rather than one approach fitted to everyone.

A pause is always on the table

If something feels sharp partway through, raise a hand and we'll stop for a moment. The clean picks back up once you're ready to continue.

Numbing gel if you'd like it

For particularly sensitive spots, a topical numbing gel can sometimes be applied first. Mention it and your dentist will talk you through the option.

The process

Four stages, with a clear decision at each one

1

We ask about sensitivity first

Before any instrument touches a tooth, you'll be asked whether anything in your mouth tends to feel sensitive to cold, pressure or touch.

2

We scale at your pace

The clean moves steadily and checks in as it goes, rather than working through your whole mouth at one fixed speed no matter how it feels.

3

We polish gently to close

The polish itself uses lighter pressure than scaling, so the appointment ends on a comfortable note rather than its most sensitive moment.

Scaling and polishing questions

What patients usually want to know

These answers explain the usual experience. Your dentist will adjust the advice to your examination, medical history and treatment plan.

It removes surface staining from tea, coffee or similar habits, so teeth often look brighter afterwards, but it won't change your natural tooth shade the way whitening would.

Have a different question?

Tell the clinic what you are concerned about. The team can explain the next sensible step before you decide on a visit.
